Virtual parking permit system

Find out more about how our virtual parking permit system works.

About our virtual permit system

Our virtual parking permit system gives you a quicker and improved service, along with more flexibility in how you use your permits.

It allows you to manage, renew and pay online for you permits, 24 hours a day, seven days a week without needing to contact us in person.

If you live in a residents' permit area, you can use your online account to buy virtual residents' permits and visitor vouchers.

How virtual permits work

When you buy a permit online, you have to enter your vehicle registration number.

You will no longer receive a paper permit to display in your vehicle.

Instead, the information is uploaded to our civil enforcement officers' devices in real-time so they can see if your vehicle is authorised to park in the permit area.

The benefits of the virtual permit system

  • You have control over your account - you can manage your permits and visitor vouchers including renewing and cancelling permits
  • If you change your vehicle, you can update your details online. There is no limit to the number of times you can change the registration number on your annual permit. This gives you more flexibility as it means you can allocate your permit to another vehicle when you are away from the permit area
  • You can apply, pay for and get your permit in one transaction. The permit is available immediately so you no longer have to wait for it to arrive before you can use it
  • As you will no longer need to display a permit in your vehicle, it cuts down on paper costs. It also means your permit can't be lost or stolen. There is also no longer a chance of receiving a parking fine because your permit was not clearly displayed
  • A virtual permit system greatly decreases the possibility of fraud, creating more space for legitimate residents

Setting up an online account

You will need:

  • An email address
  • Proof of your address, like a council tax bill, tenancy agreement or utility bill dated in the last three months
  • Your debit or credit card

If you don't have internet access

If you do not have access to the internet at home and have no family, carers or friends that can help, there are local places available that can support you with online services, like your local library.

You can also call our customer services team on 01252 398399 between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm.

How to renew a permit

The date your permit expires is shown on your online account.

We will email you to remind you that your permit is due for renewal at 28 days and then again at seven days before your current permit is due to expire. It is your responsibility to make sure your permit is current.

You can renew using your online account. Click on view and renew permits, find the permit and follow the instructions. You will have to provide an up-to-date proof of address.

If you change your vehicle

You can change your vehicle details on your online account.

You can change the vehicle registration as many times as you like. It is your responsibility to make sure your permit is registered with the correct registration number of the vehicle parked in the permit area.

How visitor vouchers work

The visitor vouchers are virtual visitor parking permits and are replacing the visitor scratchcard booklets.

One visitor voucher contains 12 daily virtual parking sessions, which are valid for 12 months.

You can buy a visitor voucher on your permit account.

If you have a visitor who needs to park in the permit area, you will need to register their vehicle for a parking session by logging into your permit account. This then gives the vehicle a virtual parking session.

Please make sure you book the visitor session before your visitor parks in the permit area to avoid getting a Penalty Charge Notice.

You can buy 17 visitor vouchers a year. The gives you up to 204 visitor parking sessions in 12 months. Unused visitor sessions will not be carried over, transferred or refunded at the end of the 12 months.

If you still have one-day visitor scratchcards

You can still use the scratchcards until December 2022.

How to cancel a permit

You may cancel your parking permit at any time.

To do this, click the 'my permits' icon on the permit account home page, select the 'view summary' icon on the permit you want to cancel and select the 'request cancellation' icon. You will be required to enter in the reason for cancelling the permit and the date you want the permit to be cancelled from.

We will contact you if a refund is due for any full months not used.

If you move home

If you move to another property in a residents' permit area, you will need to cancel your current permit(s) and apply for a new permit for your new address.

If you do not do this and the vehicle is not parked in the correct permit area, you might get a Penalty Charge Notice.

If you are moving out of a permit area, please cancel your permit online. This will allow the new resident to buy their own permit..

If tradespeople are working at your home

You can either:

  • Use the visitor sessions to register the tradesperson's vehicle registration number
  • Ask the tradesperson to contact our parking team using the contact details on this page to buy a dispensation permit.

All vehicles parked in a permit area must have a permit. This included motorcycles parked on the road.

Virtual permits are ideal for motorcycles, as displaying a permit can be an issue on some bikes.

Healthcare visitors

Healthcare professionals visiting patients who live in the permit areas can apply for an annual healthcare permit.

You will have to upload a letter on company headed paper confirming your employment with the organisation.

If you are providing care to a family member who lives in a permit area, we will consider giving you a carers permit for up to six months in certain circumstances.

For more details, please see our Healthcare parking permits page.

Car park permit for residents

If you want to park in one of our car parks, you can apply for a car park permit. This will depend on the capacity of the car park at the time you apply.

For details, please see our Car park permits for residents page.
