How to register to vote if you live abroad.

If you are a British citizen, but live outside the UK, you can register to vote in UK parliamentary elections and referendums.

Any British citizen living abroad who has previously lived in or has been registered to vote in the UK can apply. You will:

  • Be registered in the constituency where you were last registered to vote
  • or if you had not been registered to vote before, be registered in the constituency where you used to live

There was a change in the rules about voting from overseas that came into effect from 16 January 2024. There is no longer a 15-year limit on voting rights, and the registration period has changed.
