Managing the rubbish in your wheelie bin

There are a number of things you can do to keep your green rubbish bin clean and free of pests.

Managing your rubbish and green wheelie bin during coronavirus

Many of you won't be used to fortnightly rubbish collections, but our wheelie bins are designed to store household rubbish safely for several weeks.

There are a number of things you can do to help keep your bin clean:

  • Rinse out packaging, such as milk and juice cartons (TetraPaks) and non-recyclable containers, like yogurt pots, at the end of your daily washing-up before putting them into your rubbish bag or bin. This will help minimise smells
  • Tie all rubbish securely in plastic bags and double bag items that could cause smells, such as meat and fish waste and nappies
  • Don't leave cooked food waste exposed in the kitchen or in bins where it could attract flies. Maggots will only appear if flies have been able to settle on food and lay eggs
  • Keep the lid of the wheeled bin closed at all times
  • If you can, store your wheeled bin out of direct sunlight
  • Clean your bin regularly with a cleaning fluid or disinfectant: this will kill any odours, bacteria or flies
  • Try to plan meals in advance so that you don't buy too much food and end up wasting it. For lots of useful tips on how to reduce food waste and save money and recipe ideas for leftovers, see the Love Food, Hate Waste website.

No garden waste

Please do not put garden waste in your green bin.

You can either compost your garden waste at home or sign up to our garden waste recycling service.

Fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is an offence and ruins the area for everyone. If you are caught, you could face a heavy fine. See our Fly-tipping page for more details.
