We marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with flag raisings and a beacon lighting.
Flag raising
On Thursday, May 8, the The Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Mara Makunura, raised a special VE Day flag at the council offices in Farnborough.
The VE Day flag was also raised at Princes Gardens in Aldershot.
Beacon lighting
We are hosted a free open-air community event in Manor Park, Aldershot.
In the lead up to the beacon lighting, there was be music from Cove Brass, a short talk from local historian Paul Vickers and other readings, and music from a piper.
We lit our new beacon at 9.30pm, along with many others across the UK, symbolising the "light of peace" that emerged from the darkness of war.
The event was organised by us, with support from the Military Events Enhancement Group. This group includes representatives from the local community and organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Shots Foundation and the Garrison Community Team. The aim of the group is to increase collaboration and community participation in military-themed community events, and to support community integration.
Aldershot Garrison VE-Day commemorative service
Aldershot Garrison also held an 80th anniversary of VE-Day commemorative service at the Royal Garrison Church, Aldershot, on Monday, 5 May, followed by a street party.
National events
Our events were part of hundreds that took place as the nation came together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.
