Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, visited The Lighthouse Aldershot recently, to officially open the town’s newest community hub and centre for hope.

The Duchess was given a grand tour of The Lighthouse, in Andover Way, meeting volunteers and chatting with guests who’ve already been impacted by the centre’s warmth and practical support. Her Royal Highness unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the opening and planted a blueberry bush to celebrate the importance of cultivating community-based initiatives like this one.

The Lighthouse Aldershot is a vibrant space dedicated to supporting individuals and families in need, through a wide range of services including practical support, wellbeing activities, creative workshops, and pathways to resilience. The centre brings people together in order to foster connection, compassion, and transformation within the community.

Rushmoor Borough Council officers, councillors and Vivid worked together with The Lighthouse to secure the lease for the project, before the site underwent extensive renovation.

It was awarded a direct grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) which funded a garden project to rejuvenate outside space into an accessible garden, complete with a tiered herb-planter and geodome. Produce grown in the garden will be used in the food cooked inside the building for the local community. A defibrillator was also installed at the site using UKSPF funding.
