Thank you to everyone who came along to our big VE Day 80th anniversary community event at Manor Park, Aldershot last night (8 May) - we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
On a fresh spring night, the music, readings and the sound of a piper were particularly poignant as we, along with the rest of the nation, honoured the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom and those at home who experienced hardship and lost loved ones in the Second World War.
Leading the parade were four generations of the Kavanagh family, headed by Charles Kavanagh, a D-Day veteran from Aldershot, and we lit the borough’s brand-new beacon for the first time - symbolising the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of war.
We cannot thank enough all those who gave up their time to take part in this special event, including our veterans, local military services associations and youth and cadet organisations, and we hope to see you all again later in the year when we will be marking Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day).
