Following the success of the first Walk this Waste initiative in Farnborough in December, in which local people were invited to walk their bulky household waste items to a mobile van for free disposal, three new areas and dates have been announced later this month and April.

The first will be held in Rowhill ward, in Aldershot, on Saturday 22 March, followed by St Marks ward in North Camp on Saturday 29 March and then Aldershot Park ward in Aldershot on Saturday 5 April.

The new dates and areas demonstrate a commitment to create clean, safe neighbourhoods by collecting bulky waste items for free to try to help reduce fly-tipping and also to help those without transport to dispose of waste items.

A mobile van, dubbed Walk this Waste (previously called mega-skips) will be used during the roll-out on the mornings of each consecutive Saturday, from the first one on Saturday 22 March, from 7.30am – 11.30am, and will stop at advertised points along the route so people can walk their bulky items to the van and have them removed.

Only bulky items such as bed bases, mattresses, carpets, furniture, household electricals such as fridges and freezers can be collected – a full list of bulky waste items is available on the Rushmoor Borough Council website, and only up to three items can be walked to the van.

This is a walk-up service only – vehicles cannot be driven to the van and then unloaded, as that will defeat the purpose to help residents without a vehicle or access to the tip to dispose of bulky waste items.

The stops will be:

Proof of an address in the borough will need to be provided before the items can be disposed of, and no waste must be dumped along the route or at the stop locations before or after the trial. Enforcement officers will be on site.

Times are subject to change if the vehicle fills up and needs to be emptied. Please check to see if the vehicle is at your chosen location before carrying your items to it.

Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services (Pride in Place) Councillor Christine Guinness said: “We want to make sure our residents live in clean, safe neighbourhoods, which are not blighted by flytipping, so we are continuing our roll-out to new wards to see if this makes a positive difference to people and the area in general.

“We want to enhance and create pride in our borough, and having clean, safe and vibrant neighbourhoods is part of that.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local residents and people without access to a vehicle, who cannot drive to the tip, to have a good old spring clean and dispose of their bulky household items for free.”
