A new Youth Hub will open in Farnborough this autumn to help local young people access work, education and training opportunities.
Following a successful bid by Rushmoor Borough Council, securing £90,000 from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the hub will support young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and registered with Aldershot or Farnborough Jobcentres. This comes as part of the Government’s drive to open a youth hub in every local area across Britain
With unemployment among young people doubling in Rushmoor since 2019 and more than 1,000 young people estimated to be NEET in the wider Farnborough and Aldershot area, this hub will offer a crucial one-stop shop for employment advice, careers guidance, training opportunities, wellbeing and mental health support.
Partners from across the council, DWP, Jobcentre Plus, local education providers, businesses and voluntary organisations will work with young people at the hub providing support with CV writing, looking for jobs and completing job applications, interview preparation, further education opportunities and careers advice, as well as online training, workplace visits, employer introductions and confidence-building.
Councillor Julie Hall, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Skills and Regeneration, says:
"I’m delighted that the council have secured a youth hub for Rushmoor. It will give vital joined up and practical support to our young people on careers, employment advice and education opportunities, and importantly help young people to overcome barriers and build confidence. We have ambitious targets for this support under the council’s priority to promote access to skills, development and training and this Youth Hub service is vital so that our young people can benefit from a thriving local economy."
Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said:
“This new Youth Hub marks a major step forward for young people in Rushmoor, delivering real support and opportunity right here in the community. We are determined to bring opportunity to every corner of the country because no matter where you grow up, you deserve the chance to earn, to learn and to get on in life."
During the first year, the hub aims to engage 400 young people, with 30% progressing into employment and 50% progressing into education, training, work experience or volunteering.
