Rushmoor Borough Council has approved a contribution of up to £150,000 towards a proposed new third generation artificial grass pitch at Wavell School in Farnborough.
The funding would support the school’s application to the Football Foundation and could help unlock external investment for a major new sports facility for pupils, local clubs, community groups and residents.
The proposed pitch is identified as a priority in the Rushmoor 'Playing Pitch Strategy' and the Rushmoor Local Football Facilities Plan. It would help meet strong demand for 3G sports facilities across the borough and support the Council’s priorities around healthy communities, active lives, wellbeing and community resilience.
Councillor Sophie Porter, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities and Active Lives, said:
“This is an exciting opportunity to support a high-quality sports facility that would benefit people across Rushmoor. By working with Wavell School and partners, the Council could help unlock significant external investment and create more opportunities for children, young people, local clubs and residents to be active.”
Emma Wright, Headteacher at Wavell School says:
“Our Pitch In campaign is about creating a lasting facility for the school and the wider community. A new 3G pitch would transform opportunities for PE, extra-curricular sport, grassroots football and community use outside school hours.”
The proposed facility would provide more opportunities for children, young people, women and girls, disabled residents, local clubs and under-represented groups to take part in sport. Community use would be expected during evenings, weekends and school holidays, with long-term access secured through a Football Foundation community usage agreement.
