We have supported the government to resettle a small number of Afghan households in Aldershot and Farnborough.

We have been doing this support since the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan in August 2021.

Fewer than ten households have been resettled in Rushmoor to date, up to April 2026.  This figure does not include individuals who have settled in the area, following a successful asylum claim.

Current government policy

All UK Afghan resettlement routes are now delivered through the Afghan Resettlement Programme. This brings together the following former schemes:

  • Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy
  • Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme
  • Afghanistan Response Route

These schemes closed to new applications and referrals on 1 July 2025. No new applications can be made, and there are currently no open resettlement routes for Afghan nationals outside the UK.

The government is continuing to process and resettle:

  • People who applied before the closing date
  • People already accepted into the resettlement system
  • Eligible immediate family members linked to those cases

Resettlement activity is expected to continue for several years while existing cases are completed. Every year we and other local authorities are asked to support the government’s efforts in this area.

Some Afghan households may also be resettled through the Communities for Afghans scheme. This scheme works with community organisations to provide accommodation and local support for people already eligible under the Afghan Resettlement Programme.

Please visit the Refugee Council's Communities for Afghans pages for more information.

Rights of Afghans under the scheme

Afghans who move to the UK under a resettlement scheme have the right to:

  • Claim specific government-funded support for the first three years of their stay
  • Work and study in the UK
  • Find their own accommodation in the private rented sector anywhere in the UK
  • Claim benefits, if they qualify for them

These rights are intended to help households integrate into British society, help them learn English and find jobs to become independent and start contributing to the local economy.

The support is coordinated and provided mainly by Hampshire County Council.
