Five playgrounds in Farnborough and Aldershot are set to be refurbished or renewed over the next two years after Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed a £400,000 investment programme.

The Cabinet heard on Tuesday (30 June) that the five playgrounds have been identified as among the most in need of updating, with some equipment more than 25 to 30 years old, making it challenging to keep them safe for children.

Work will be carried out in this financial year at Keith Lucas Road and Sunnybank Road/Dart Road in Farnborough, and at Aspen Grove in Aldershot and Montgomery Road and Cumbria Court in Farnborough in 2027/28.

The Cabinet was told that of the 40 playgrounds the council has in Aldershot and Farnborough, 16 are of a high priority for renewal or refurbishment, ranked according to their overall condition and the size and catchment area they serve.

Rushmoor Borough Council will become part of a new North Hampshire unitary council in 2028 and will recommend a programme of continued playground upgrades to the new council.

Councillor Christine Guinness, Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Pride in Place and Neighbourhood Services, said: “The Cabinet has made it a priority to invest in our local playgrounds, not only to improve our neighbourhoods, but also to make sure children can lead safe, healthy and active lives from an early age.

“The £400,000 spend over the next two years is a significant and positive step towards this commitment and we hope that now we have set a programme in place to improve local facilities for our residents, this will continue in the future.”
