Armed Forces Day 2021 - How we celebrated

Find out how we celebrated this year's Armed Forces Day on Saturday 26 June 2021.

Armed Forces Day Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the whole nation to celebrate the Armed Forces community and to recognise the work they do to protect the UK at home and overseas.

Thousands of Rushmoor residents celebrated Armed Forces Day in Aldershot on Saturday 26 June 2021.

Over 4,300 local pupils took part in a large-scale arts project to learn more about the armed forces and thank the troops. Over the last few weeks, children from 20 schools have been creating artwork that came together in a colourful installation on the Princes Gardens Bandstand.

The schools worked in partnership with Aldershot Garrison and The Artroom to explore the different skills needed to make the army a success. The project was funded by Rushmoor Borough Council and a selection of the artwork will be on display at Aldershot Military Museum over the next few weeks.

Alongside the arts installation, four sold out outdoor performances of Louise Jordan's Pop-up Pedestal were held in the Gardens. The show explored the story of Florence Nightingale, who was in the first group of nurses to work on the front line during the Crimean War.

In the evening, six beacons of light shone across Aldershot's night sky in celebration. Thousands of residents were able to see the lights safely from their home and gardens, allowing them to mark the day in their own way.
