The opening of Farnborough town centre's Landing area, a successful summer of events and a crackdown on flytipping were among the highlights of recent projects, councillors from Rushmoor Borough Council heard last night (Tuesday 25 November).

Members of the Council’s Cabinet heard that good progress has been made in most key projects and activities outlined in its Delivery Plan of priorities, for the period between July and September, with 17 of the 23 (74 per cent) strands of work on track for completion.

The Delivery Plan is structured across five themes: Skills, Economy, and Regeneration, Homes for All: Quality Living, Affordable Housing, Community and Wellbeing: Active Lives, Healthier and Stronger Communities, Pride in Place: Clean, Safe and Vibrant Neighbourhoods and The Future and Financial Sustainability and currently includes 23 priorities.

On Skills, Economy and Regeneration, councillors highlighted successes including a recent jobs fair in Aldershot, attended by 400 people, a series of 15 events held at The Landing in Farnborough town centre, which increased visitors by 7,000, and 40 town centre events, bringing in fun for residents and footfall to the town centres. Other highlights included that all eight units at the Maker’s Yard in Aldershot are now let, and four more units at Union Yard are due to be let and opened soon. A new cafe-bar Loungers is also set to open in Farnborough town centre next year.

On Community and Wellbeing: Active Lives, Healthier and Stronger Communities, councillors heard that a successful summer campaign promoting Active in Rushmoor had achieved good engagement with residents, VJ Day 80 had been celebrated with a community Beacon Lighting Event at Manor Park, Aldershot in August, and a Live Longer Better Nepali project of exercise and education, in Cherrywood, now has 35 people attending weekly classes.

The recent roll out of pink electrical recycling banks across the borough was one of the key successes in the Pride in Place: Clean, Safe and Vibrant Neighbourhoods workstream, alongside chewing gum removal and street washing within Farnborough town centre and parts of Station Road in Aldershot, public engagement sessions promoting public safety and recycling and cracking down on flytipping through issuing and collecting fines.

Progress continues to be made on the delivery of affordable homes, with highlights such as a recent meeting with Vivid – the largest social housing provider in the borough, with more than 5000 properties.

The Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council, Councillor Gareth Williams, said:

“It is fantastic to see the progress that has been made in a short space of time. We promised that we would tackle the issues which mean the most to our residents, such as job creation, regeneration, and clean safe streets, and I am pleased that we are delivering these priorities for local people, while remaining committed to restoring the council to financial sustainability.
