Dedicated Aldershot volunteers Caroline and Mick Mills have been honoured with a Mayor’s Award, recognising more than 20 years of outstanding service – particularly their unwavering support for the wider Armed Forces community.

Aldershot volunteers Caroline and Mick Mills with the Mayor of Rushmoor

The award was presented by the Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Calum Stewart, as a surprise during a special “100 days to go” event in Aldershot, marking the town’s role as host of this year’s national Armed Forces Day celebrations in June.

Caroline and Mick have become central figures in community and Armed Forces life in Aldershot. Through their leadership within the Aldershot Royal British Legion, they organise regular coffee mornings, major seasonal events, branch meetings and trips – creating vital opportunities for connection, support and companionship.

They are also instrumental in Aldershot’s annual Poppy Appeal, coordinating volunteers, managing collections and ensuring the campaign runs smoothly. Alongside this, they organise and support key remembrance events, including the Remembrance Sunday service in the Municipal Gardens and the military cemetery lighting ceremony, both delivered with dignity and pride.

Their impact extends further. As Cub Leaders with the 2nd Aldershot Scouts, they support and inspire young people, while also holding key roles within the Royal British Legion and Royal Navy Association. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they volunteered at the vaccination centre and provided practical support to those in need – reflecting a long-standing commitment to helping others.

One of their nominators for the Award said: “Caroline and Mick have helped so many people. They show real selflessness, kindness and compassion, and their civic pride shines through in everything they do.”

Presenting the award, Councillor Stewart said: “It is my great pleasure to honour Caroline and Mick with this award.

"You give your time, energy and care across so many aspects of community life in Aldershot. Through your leadership in local scouting, your tireless work with the Royal British Legion and the Royal Naval Association, and your wider support to the Armed Forces community and their families, you play a central role in strengthening our community.

"You are at the heart of many of our most important civic and remembrance events. From organising the Remembrance Sunday service in the Municipal Gardens, to leading the Poppy Appeal and supporting the Military Cemetery lighting ceremony, your dedication ensures these moments are delivered with dignity, pride and respect. The scale of your commitment, particularly during the Poppy Appeal, is truly remarkable.

"What stands out most is the personal difference you make to people’s lives. You show kindness, compassion and generosity in everything you do – visiting those who are unwell, supporting individuals in their homes, and always being there when it matters most. You help people regain confidence, rebuild their lives, and feel part of something again.

"Through all of this, you create a strong sense of belonging and community. You bring people together, support those in need, and inspire others to give their time in the same way.

"It is a privilege to recognise your service in this way.”
