Plans for the arrival of Loungers in Farnborough have taken a step forward after members of Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed to appoint an Aldershot-based contractor for essential works at 16-18 The Meads.
The council-owned building, which has been chosen by Loungers as its preferred location, requires renovation to convert it from a shop unit into a space that meets the requirements of a food and drink operator.
Once the lease with Loungers has been finalised, the contract for the refurbishment work will be awarded to K7 Renovations, ensuring the project will also provide an immediate boost for the local economy during the construction phase.
Councillor Julie Hall, Cabinet lead for Economy, Skills and Regeneration at Rushmoor Borough Council, said: “Identifying K7 Renovations, a local business, as our preferred contractor for these preparatory works enables us to get this project firmly off the ground and quickly.
“I know that when people walk past an empty shop progress isn’t always obvious, but I want to reassure residents that a lot of work is, and has been, taking place behind the scenes. Investment in this project signals our continued commitment to transforming the town centre, improving the retail environment for residents, and creating the right conditions for businesses to thrive.”
The arrival of Loungers will be a significant step forward for Rushmoor Borough Council’s economic and social regeneration plans for Farnborough. Once open, the new café bar is expected to broaden the town’s food and drink offering while creating new jobs and complementing town centre improvements which have already taken place around the north entrance to The Meads.
Building contractors are expected to start work on site in the coming weeks.
