The owner of an Aldershot store found to have mouldy food in his fridge has accepted a caution from Rushmoor Borough Council.

The caution was issued to the sole director of S & J Sweets and Savouries Ltd in Union Street, Aldershot, on Tuesday (20 August), and followed a routine food hygiene inspection on 23 July which discovered a number of failings.

The environmental health officer inspecting identified several food hygiene contraventions, including poor temperature control of foods, an absence of appropriate procedures to ensure food safety, and a lack of food safety training. The officer also found mouldy food containers stored above ready to eat sweets.

The foods at risk were immediately thrown away and the owner was given immediate instructions and support on how to bring the business back in line with food hygiene requirements, with his business rated a ‘1’ (major improvement necessary) in the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Further interventions have been made since to check on progress and to ensure the safety of food in the store.

The council regularly inspects more than 400 food business in Aldershot and Farnborough every year using the scheme, and each inspection results in a food hygiene rating from ‘zero – urgent improvement necessary’ to ‘5 – very good’, which the business can choose to display. The results are published on the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) website.

Rushmoor Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Pride in Place/Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Christine Guinness, said: “The council’s role in ensuring the safety of food for our residents is an absolute priority, and I give my full support to our environmental health officers in addressing the risks in this case.

“We will always seek to support businesses in Aldershot and Farnborough, but I hope this case sends a clear message that where food businesses expose customers to risk, we will act swiftly and appropriately."

The council’s environmental health officers carried out 60 food hygiene inspections in May and June, with 38 of those being awarded the maximum food hygiene rating of “5”.
