The owners of an Aldershot restaurant have appeared in court charged with four food safety offences found by Rushmoor Borough Council’s Environmental Health Officers during a food hygiene inspection.

Newa Brothers Limited admitted all four offences relating to Vintuna at 128 Victoria Road, Aldershot, when they appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Friday 17 April. The case was adjourned until September for sentencing.

The offences related to an inspection carried out by the council’s officers following information received from Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards team about possible illegal meat imports and poor hygiene practices.

The inspection in November 2024 found illegally imported dried buffalo meat and a significant and active cockroach infestation. The officers found the premises to be dirty and greasy, with rat droppings in an external cupboard where food equipment was stored. Food equipment was dirty, and necessary routine hygiene checks had not been carried out for months.

The premises was immediately closed by voluntary agreement until all the required works were completed and was rated a ‘zero’ (urgent improvement necessary) under the Food Standards’ Agency, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. The business eventually re-opened a month later on 24 December 2024. Following the failings, the council brought four charges for food safety offences against Newa Brothers Limited.

The council’s officers have continued to work with the business and, following the most recent inspection on 10 September 2025, the business is now rated as a ‘4’ (good).

Colin Alborough, Rushmoor Borough Council’s Service Manager for Environmental Health, said: “I wholly support the officers’ actions in this case to follow up on intelligence received and to act swiftly and appropriately to reduce the risk to public health. These matters are taken very seriously."

Colin added: “I’d certainly recommend that everyone should check the hygiene rating of a food business before they purchase – that gives a very good indication of the hygiene standards my officers found at the time of their last inspection.”

The council’s Environmental Health team inspects more than 400 food business in Aldershot and Farnborough every year, and each inspection results in a food hygiene rating from “zero” (urgent improvement necessary) to “5” (very good). The results are published on the Food Standards Agency’s website
