It is with deep sadness that we have learnt about the passing of former councillor and Honorary Alderman John Debenham MBE on Sunday 29 September.

John DebenhamJohn was the Mayor of Rushmoor in 1974-76 when the new Rushmoor Council was forming. During his service on the Council, which spanned four decades, John was an active Member of the Council, Cabinet Member and Chairman of numerous Council bodies and Committees. He was made an Honorary Alderman of the Council in 2002 and was awarded the MBE for services to the community.

John’s voluntary connections ran deep, and he was particularly notable for his work with the former Devereux House and at Knellwood in Farnborough, where he spent the last six years of his life.

While at Knellwood John offered companionship to new residents. He also became the Chairman of the residents' committee and brought some of the same skills he had used during his time as a councillor.

He was also a member of the residents' choir and active participant in all recreational activities.

Our thoughts are with John’s family at this time.
