How we assess the 'sustainability' of our plans

We must assess the policies and proposals in the Rushmoor Plan to make sure they contribute to the aims of sustainable development.

This process is known as Sustainability Appraisal. We must test the overall planning strategy, policy approaches and allocations against a number of social, economic and environmental objectives to identify that they are the most sustainable when considered against reasonable alternatives.

Under a European directive, we also have to provide a Strategic Environmental Appraisal (SEA). Although the requirements to produce a Sustainability Appraisal and a Strategic Environmental Appraisal are two different things, government guidance says that it is possible to satisfy the two requirements through a single approach.

You can find the Sustainability Appraisal scoping report and Sustainability Appraisal for the Rushmoor Local Plan on our Rushmoor Local Plan development plan document page.
