Aldershot railway station

As a key gateway into the town centre, we are working with the rail and bus operators to improve Aldershot railway station.

Our regeneration plans for Aldershot railway station

We have identified Aldershot railway station as a priority site in need of improvement to help bring about the transformation of Aldershot town centre.

We have included the site in our emerging Rushmoor Local Plan and in the pdf icon Aldershot town centre prospectus [11Mb] as a site with redevelopment potential.

Together with the rail and bus operators and Hampshire County Council, we submitted a bid for - and secured -  funding to the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership to carry out improvements to the public space around the railway station building.

The scheme proposes rationalising land use in and around the railway station to create a better public transport interchange within the forecourt of the station to include bus stops and a taxi rank and improved pedestrian links into the town centre.

The bus station would be relocated into the town centre, freeing up a useful development site, and helping to reduce traffic congestion around the railway station caused by unnecessary bus movements.

Following the meeting of stakeholders in January 2018, site investigation works will be carried out, with the aim to be completed by May 2018 subject to the appropriate funding being secured.

A detailed design for the scheme should be completed by July 2018 and it is hoped that work can begin on site within the next 12 months, subject to the outcome of the site investigation works.

About the Aldershot railway station site

Aldershot railway station is an attractive Victorian building, but the area around it, including the parking, bus stands and road system could be improved.

An assessment carried out as part of an Aldershot Travel Plan (2012) identified the following high level objectives:

  • Improve access to the station by sustainable transport modes and increase station patronage
  • Improve the forecourt and car park for all users, particularly with regard to safety
  • Improve wayfinding between the station and key destinations in the town
  • Improve physical and information links between the bus and rail stations
