Adapting to climate change

What we are doing to help adapt to changing weather patterns in Aldershot and Farnborough.

Extreme local weather events

Getting information about our changing weather helps us plan for the future.

We record all extreme local weather events in Aldershot and Farnborough and the problems they cause. This work shows that extreme weather is becoming more common. We have produced an action plan to help us deal with extreme weather by:

  • Looking at how different types of extreme weather (such as flooding, hurricanes, droughts and snow) could affect our ability to provide essential services, such as waste collection
  • Using scientific information about expected weather changes in Rushmoor up to 2099

Action plan for dealing with changing weather patterns

The plan outlines the actions that we can take locally, often working in partnership with Hampshire County Council and other agencies. Examples of recent work include:

  • Ensuring that local planning policy includes the need for more energy and water efficient buildings, sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) and areas for wildlife
  • Reviewing flood plans, improving flood planning and storing sandbags
  • Buying a snow plough attachment for one of our vehicles to help keep car parks and minor roads open
  • Regular tree inspections to see if they will be safe during high winds
  • Supporting local health authorities' heat wave plan
  • Producing a biodiversity action plan to help wildlife adapt to a changing climate
  • Working with local people to establish residential gardens as 'links' between wildlife habitats

We review the plan every three years to see if agreed actions are working and if there is anything more we can do.
