National planning policy

Find out about national planning policy.

National Planning Policy Framework

The government updated the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) on 19 February 2019.

This sets out the government's planning policies for England and how they should be applied to plan-making and planning decisions.

The updated National Planning Policy Framework came into immediate effect, and we must now consider it when we decide planning applications and prepare future development plan documents.

The updated National Planning Policy Framework replaces the previous version which was published in 2018, replacing the 2012 version.

National planning policy for traveller sites

The government published revised national Planning policy for traveller sites in 2015. This sets out the government's planning policy and aims for traveller sites and should be read alongside the National Planning Policy Framework.

National Planning Practice Guidance

You should read the National Planning Practice Guidance (NPPG) in conjunction with national policy contained in the National Planning Policy Framework.

The online National Planning Policy Guidance will be updated when needed, and it is possible to sign up for email alerts on any changes or to view these revisions on the site itself.

Other national planning guidance

The government has also published detailed national guidance for councils on viability and housing and economic development needs assessments.
