How to advertise your application for a new premises licence or club premises certificate, or a full or minor variation.

Local newspaper (applications for new premises licences, club premises certificates and full variations)

You must publish the notice at least once within ten working days of submitting your application to us.

We have provided a list of local newspapers, together with publication and submission dates below.

We advise you to check these details, since they are subject to change. Also, check that the newspaper you choose circulates in the area to which your application relates.

Site notice

For new applications and full variations

You must advertise your application at the premises.

This notice must be A4 or larger, pale blue in colour and located in such a position where someone can conveniently read it from the exterior of the premises.

This notice must be printed legibly. It should be in font size 16 or more, and printed or typed in black ink. You must display it for 28 consecutive days from the day you submit the application to us.

You must display an A4 notice every 50 metres if the premises is large.

For minor variations

You must advertise your application at the premises.

This notice must be A4 or larger, white in colour and put in a position where someone can conveniently read it from outside the premises.

This notice must be printed legibly. It should be in font size 16 or more, and printed or typed in black ink. You must display it for ten working days from the day after you submitted the application to us.

You must display an A4 notice every 50 metres if the premises is large.

Content for newspaper and site notice

Both the newspaper and site notice must contain:

A statement of the relevant 'licensable activities' that are planned, together with:

  • The name of the applicant
  • The postal address of the premises concerned
  • Our postal and website address, stating where and when the record of the application on the licensing register may be inspected
  • The date by which objections must be received, and that they must be made in writing
  • That it is an offence to knowingly or recklessly to make a false statement in connection with an application together with the maximum fine if convicted

We may monitor the premises and the local press to make sure that you meet these requirements.

If you fail to meet these requirements, your application may be invalid.

We recommend that you forward a copy of the notice and a complete copy of the newspaper to us for our records.
