Designated premises supervisor

Find out how to appoint or change your designated premises supervisor (DPS).

Every premises licensed for the sale of alcohol must have someone named as the 'designated premises supervisor' (DPS).

Role of the designated premises supervisor

The designated premises supervisor is responsible for the sale of alcohol at the licensed premises. The supervisor also acts as the main point of contact for any licensing, compliance or enforcement enquiries with the licensing or police authorities.

Who should be the designated premises supervisor

The designated premises supervisor must be a personal licence holder.

The designated premises supervisor should be a person with sufficient authority to control and direct activities at the licensed premises. Normally, this is the person who has day-to-day responsibility for running the premises. The designated premises supervisor could also be the premises licence holder.

Appoint a designated premises supervisor

You must provide a designated premises supervisor when you apply for a premises licence, allowing the sale of alcohol. A premises licence can only name one designated premises supervisor, but a designated premises supervisor can be named on more than one premises licence.

The proposed designated premises supervisor must give a written consent form to accept this responsibility when applying for a premises licence.

Change the designated premises supervisor

If you change your designated premises supervisor, you must apply to make a change to your premises licence.

You can change the designated premises supervisor online using the GOV.UK website. To do this you will need to use Adobe Reader 8.1 or above.  Download the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Remove yourself as the designated premises supervisor

If you no longer want to be named as the designated premises supervisor on a premises licence, you must tell us in writing.

You can remove yourself as the designated premises supervisor using the GOV.UK website. To do this you will need to use Adobe Reader 8.1 or above.  Download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
