Charity and business benefit from rate relief

Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet has approved discretionary business rates for two organisations - one a charity and one a not-for-profit business, both based in Aldershot

The Cabinet, meeting on Tuesday 13 October, agreed to grant charity The Source 20% relief on business rates until 31 March 2022, and 50% relief to WSX Developments backdated for the period from 1 April 2017 until 31 March this year.

The Source asked for discretionary relief on its Bike Start project which operates out of Browning Barracks, refurbishing bikes and selling them on. The project also provides service and repair checks to the public and trains groups and individuals in bike maintenance.

All surplus income funds the charity's work transforming the lives of disadvantaged young people through youth work, mentoring, counselling and training. The business rate relief will save them £6,383.

WSX Developments, a not-for-profit business organisation, based in St Anne's House in Aldershot, runs serviced offices for start-up businesses, and provides training programmes covering finance, digital skills and general business advice. The organisation currently has 43 businesses running from its offices, with capacity for another 20.

So far, WSX Developments has helped 97 businesses with just a 5% failure rate compared with the national average of 60%. The business rate relief will save more than £56,000.

Councillor Paul Taylor, Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet member for Corporate Services, said: "The Source does some tremendous work in Rushmoor and can make a real difference to young people's lives. This business rate relief gives the charity a little extra to spend on important services.

"WSX offers many services to start-up companies, including training and business support, as well as giving them a home to grow and develop. It's important we back businesses like this that are a lifeline for people just starting out. Both businesses are of true value to Rushmoor."
