Queen's Birthday Honour awarded to Executive Director of Rushmoor Borough Council for services to the community

A British Empire Medal (BEM) has been awarded to Rushmoor Borough Council Executive Director Karen Edwards to honour her services to the community as a key worker during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Karen was recognised for her outstanding leadership during the crisis, which saw council officers and volunteers working together to support the residents of Aldershot and Farnborough, as well as people across Hampshire, ensuring their welfare throughout the pandemic.

Working alongside Rushmoor Voluntary Services, local charities and neighbourhood groups, Karen led a team dedicated to helping people who called the Coronavirus Helpline needing assistance with a variety of issues, from how to source food or collect medicines to finding someone to talk to or to help with practical jobs such as putting out a bin or posting a letter. She also worked as part of the emergency welfare response across the whole of Hampshire, helping to co-ordinate the work of the 11 Hampshire districts to support residents who were shielding or vulnerable.

Karen, who has worked for Rushmoor Borough Council since 2005, said: "It is lovely to be recognised in this way. This honour though, is dedicated to all my amazing council and voluntary sector colleagues across Hampshire, who worked so hard, together with our hundreds of volunteers, and made sure that all our shielding and vulnerable residents had food, medicine, support and a safe place to sleep. I'm very proud of everyone, and to have been able to play my part in that."

Karen became an Executive Director at Rushmoor Borough Council in 2015, and currently leads the Council's Regeneration, Property and Digital Transformation Programmes.
