Aldershot Lido to stay closed this summer

With continued uncertainty about the safe re-opening of swimming pools, Rushmoor Borough Council has taken the difficult decision to keep Aldershot Lido closed this summer.

The outdoor pool's summer season usually runs from the end of May to the beginning of September and takes at least a month to get ready for opening.

This includes servicing, cleaning, and filling the 90-year-old pool and its tank and chlorinating the water; preparing the site; and recruiting and training the seasonal staff, particularly the 30-plus lifeguards needed over the three months.

But with the normal Lido summer season now well under way, and concerns that on-going social distancing measures would drastically limit the number of visitors allowed in the pool anyway, the council and Places Leisure, which manages the Lido on its behalf, have reluctantly agreed that the Lido will not open this summer.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, the council's Cabinet member for Operational Services, said: "We are hugely disappointed to have to make this decision, as we know many residents love their summer trips to the Lido. but these are exceptional times that find ourselves in and safety must come first."
