Extra cash help for small businesses

A new grant scheme to help support small and micro businesses that have suffered as a result of the coronavirus crisis has been launched by Rushmoor Borough Council.

The COVID-19 Discretionary Grant Fund is for businesses that were not eligible for financial support under the Small Business Grant Fund or the Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Fund.

Under the scheme, small businesses have until 5pm on Tuesday 16 June to apply to the council for a grant of up to £10,000 towards the fixed costs of their property, including rent, utilities, business insurance and business rates, if applicable.

They will need to show that they have seen a significant drop in their income because of the pandemic, but still have relatively high property overheads.

Councillor Paul Taylor, Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet member for Corporate Services, said: "We know this is an extremely challenging time for businesses and we are keen to support our local companies affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

"Through the government grant schemes, we have already been able to support more than 950 local businesses and have paid out more than £13 million in grants. This latest scheme gives us more than £700,000 to help more of our small businesses that we have not been able to support through other grants. In turn, this is enabling us to support our local economy and protect jobs for the future."

Because the grant scheme is discretionary, the council is giving priority to small businesses and charities in shared offices or other flexible workspaces; market traders with a permanent stand; bed and breakfasts that pay council tax rather than business rates and some charity properties.

Businesses that think they may be eligible can find out more and apply on the council's website, www.rushmoor.gov.uk/businessgrants.
