Council awards £23.5 million worth of rate relief to support local businesses

More than £23.5 million worth of rate relief has been awarded to businesses in Aldershot and Farnborough to help support them through the coronavirus pandemic.

Rushmoor Borough Council has successfully identified 595 local businesses that are eligible for 100% rate relief under the government's business rates retail discount scheme.

This scheme, originally for retail businesses, has now been expanded to cover those in the leisure and hospitality sectors and also local nurseries. The government has also increased the relief available from 50% to 100% and lifted restrictions on the size of business that could claim.

This means that the number of businesses the council is now able to support through the scheme has increased from 242 to 595, including ten nurseries, which are receiving £160,000 worth of relief.

This is in addition to more than £10 million in government grant funding that the council has provided to more than 750 eligible small and medium sized businesses in Aldershot and Farnborough to support them through the crisis.

Councillor Marina Munro, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economy at Rushmoor Borough Council, said: "There is huge financial pressure on many of our businesses during this crisis and I am pleased that as a council, we've been able to respond quickly to make sure that businesses get the support they so desperately need."

Councillor Munro added: "Since the restrictions on the size of business were removed, we've been able to help an additional 353 businesses and thanks to the efficiency of our business rates team, we've managed to get this relief applied before the money was due to be taken on 1 May."

Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sector do not need to take any action to claim this relief and the council will be sending them a revised business rates bill for the year 2020-21, confirming that no business rates will be payable for this year.

Local businesses who think that they may be eligible for this discount, but have not received a new bill should contact the council's business rates using the contact details on this page.
