Digital era for old town hall

Aldershot's old town hall is set to be transformed into a digital hub for fledgling companies in the digital and computer games sector.

Rushmoor Borough Council has taken a lease on the Grade II listed building in Grosvenor Road from local business The Rock and Pop Foundation, which has its headquarters in the neighbouring building.

The council will now work with Guildford-based Rocketdesk to set up and run the hub for digital start-up companies, offering flexible desk, office and meeting space, plus opportunities for collaborative working.

Contractors Beam Construction will start on transforming the old town hall this in March, with the new hub due to be up and running by early summer.

The move is in response to the council's aim of supporting the growth and development of digital and gaming businesses based in and around Aldershot and to expand this sector of the local economy.

The council worked on the project with the Local Enterprise Partnership (Enterprise M3) and has secured funding for refurbishment of the building from the Enterprise M3 Local Growth Fund, as well as from the One Public Estate programme.

Councillor Martin Tennant, Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet member for Major Projects and Property, said: "Aldershot is becoming increasingly popular as a base for digital and computer gaming companies, and this is something we want to encourage, as it fits well with the town. We are delighted to be working with Rocketdesk, which will also strengthen links between Aldershot and Guildford, which itself has a growing reputation in the video game sector.

"More widely, this means that the old town hall, which we know is a much-loved building, will be refurbished to a high standard and enjoy a new and long lease of life."

Anyone interested in taking space at the Digital Hub should contact Nicky Phillips, Rushmoor Borough Council's skills and employment project support officer at nicky.phillips@rushmoor.gov.uk or on 01252 398764.
