Silver Award for Rushmoor

In recognition of its commitment to the Armed Forces, Rushmoor Borough Council has been presented with a prestigious Silver Award by the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

The award is given to organisations considered to offer excellent support to the Armed Forces including service leavers, reservists, cadets' forces, volunteers and employees with family in the military.

To be eligible for the award, the council had to have already achieved a bronze level standard and signed The Armed Forces Covenant, a national promise to those who serve, or who have served, in the armed forces and their families, that they will do all  they can to make sure they are treated fairly and are not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives. The council signed up to the covenant back in 2012.

Among things the council does to support the armed forces is a special leave policy to support staff wishing to join the armed forces as a reservist and a military buddy scheme to support employees who are partners of service personnel and a group of staff regularly meet to share experiences.

The council has also supported a number of military events including a community wide celebration of Armed Forces Day, with a military parade through the town centre.

Councillor David Clifford, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council said: "We are delighted to receive this award. Rushmoor has strong military connections and we are proud to have Aldershot, the historic home of the British Army in our borough and a number of military family members working here. The award recognises our efforts to support local service personnel and their families and to help them integrate with the wider community."

Councillor Jacqui Vosper, Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet Champion for the Armed Forces who works closely with the Aldershot Garrison and military authorities added: "We have a long history of supporting the armed forces and will be very proudly displaying our Silver Award in the council offices."

Commenting on the announcement of the 2019 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver awards, Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace said: "These awards recognise the outstanding support for our armed forces from employers across Britain and I would like to thank and congratulate each and every one.

"Regardless of size, location or sector, employing ex-forces personnel is good for business and this year we have doubled the number of awards in recognition of the fantastic support they give."
