Food store cautioned for selling mouldy food

Rushmoor Borough Council has cautioned an Aldershot food store after one of its environmental health officer discovered mouldy and out-of-date food and poor levels of hygiene there.

The officer visited the shop on 18 December after receiving a complaint about mouldy food being sold the previous day and issued a 'zero' rating under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Shaban Halal Foods in Station Road, Aldershot had failed to implement monitoring procedures and did not have effective controls in place. This had resulted in mouldy Indian-style sweets being on sale, as well as a number of packs of paneer cheese beyond their use-by date.

The officer noted that the display fridge was dirty and operating well above the legal temperature for high-risk foods.  All of the above seriously compromised food safety.

At the time of the visit, the store disposed of numerous food items and made immediate improvements.  A follow-up visit has confirmed that the store is maintaining the improved standards.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet member for Operational Services, said: "Selling food after the use-by date or in mouldy condition can have very serious consequences for both the retailer and the consumer.

"This case demonstrates that the council is committed to protecting the public and that it is unacceptable for food businesses to disregard their duty to protect the safety of food for their customers.

"I hope this case will remind traders of the importance of regularly checking their stock, and also reassure residents that our officers will continue their work to protect them by inspecting premises and taking appropriate action where necessary and I fully support this staged approach."
