New booking service for free Christmas tree recycling collections

Residents in Aldershot and Farnborough are being asked to book to have their real Christmas tree collected for recycling at the end of the festive season.

Every year, Rushmoor Borough Council collects Christmas trees for free from outside residents' homes and takes them to be composted.

But this year, for the first time, it is asking people to book a free collection on the Christmas tree collection page on its website.

Using the new booking service, residents can now book a collection for January and receive confirmation, with the booking going directly to the council's contractor, Serco. This way, the council will know exactly who needs their Christmas tree collected and when.

Since it launched the new service on Monday 3 December, more than 420 residents have already booked their collections.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, Cabinet member for Operational Services, said: "In previous years, we've simply asked people to leave their trees out for collection, but it can be difficult for the crews to spot them, especially with the dark mornings, so we hope this new service will prove better for all. Feedback so far has been that customers find it easy to use and it has already proved extremely popular."

He added: "The booking service is the first of a number of integrated online services we are planning to bring in over the next few months to improve the experience for our customers. We are keen to see how it goes and have included a feedback form as part of the booking so we can learn from what customers tell us and make further improvements, where needed."
