Community shines a light on Christmas in Aldershot

A group of Aldershot residents has been working with us to organise three Saturdays of community events and festive fun for the town centre in celebration of Christmas.

The first of the events, the takes places this Saturday 9 December from 10am to 5pm with local schoolchildren and performers taking to a stage at the bottom of Union Street.

Members of the Aldershot Community Together group have been busy promoting the events, organising live entertainment and encouraging local schools and community groups to get involved.

Shoppers can browse the Christmas Craft Fayre and festive stalls in Union Street.  There will also be children's rides, free face painting and the Little Dallas Donkeys.  The Rotary Christmas float will also be in town and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care and Rowhill Nature Reserve will have fundraising stalls.

Aldershot Civic Society will be hosting a stall selling copies of the 2018 Aldershot calendar for £5 (all proceeds to charity).  Children can also take part in a Christmas quiz and receive a small treat.

Over at The Wellington shopping centre, families can also enjoy a free visit to Santa in his toy box themed grotto from 11am to 3pm.

Aldershot resident and member of the Aldershot Community Together group, Jessica Hannington said: "We are really excited to be working alongside the council again this year to bring something to the community for Christmas. We've had a lot of fun organising these events and I hope that people have a great time on Saturday, the start of our community Christmas! So many people have come together to make it happen, I know it will be a great day for everyone."

Councillor Gareth Lyon, Cabinet Member for Concessions and Community Support at Rushmoor Borough Council added: "We can't thank the members of the Aldershot Community Together group enough.  Everyone has been working so hard, giving up their evenings and weekends to support the town, pull together the events and put on something really special for Aldershot."

The festive fun continues on Saturday 16 December, when the community will shine a light on Aldershot with a day of live music performed by local bands, free hands-on craft activities with the West End Centre and a rodeo reindeer.  The highlight of the day will be Aldershot's first ever magical lantern procession through the town centre at 4.30pm.  The council and volunteers have been working with local schoolchildren and community organisations to create over 350 colourful willow lanterns. Visitors are advised to arrive early to get a good viewing spot in the town centre!

Saturday 23 December will be a day of merry music with brass bands performing festive songs and Christmas Carols to entertain shoppers, plus more festive fun with The Little Dallas Donkeys, children's rides and the Little Magic Ponies.  All of the activities will build up to the popular Carols in the Bandstand evening at 5.30pm in Princes Gardens.
