How we assess the 'sustainability' of our plans

We must assess the policies and proposals in the Rushmoor Plan to make sure they contribute to the aims of sustainable development.

The results of this assessment are set out in documents called Sustainability Appraisals (SA).

Sustainability appraisal is mandatory under the Planning and Compulsory Act 2004 for the production of local plans.  When producing a plan for the future development of our area, we have to consider the wider social, environmental and economic effects that its implementation may have on the conditions that currently exist (otherwise known as the baseline).

We are also required, under a European directive, to provide a Strategic Environmental Appraisal (SEA).

Although the requirements to produce a Sustainability Appraisal and a Strategic Environmental Appraisal are two different things, government guidance says that it is possible to satisfy the two requirements through a single approach.

You will find the Sustainability Appraisal for the Core Strategy on our Rushmoor Core Strategy page.

You will find the Sustainability Appraisal scoping report, and draft Sustainability Appraisal for the Rushmoor Local Plan on our Rushmoor Local Plan development plan document page.
