Planning Application for Westgate in AldershotThe £65 million WestGate cinema and restaurant complex planned for Aldershot has been given the go-ahead in principle by Rushmoor Borough Council's Development Control Committee. The Committee agreed unanimously on Wednesday evening that planning permission should be granted for the high-profile development, which will sit at the top of the High Street alongside the Princes Hall. The planning application now has to be referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government who has 21 days to decide if the Council can go ahead and issue planning consent. Final permission will also be subject to a legal agreement between Hampshire County Council and WestGate Aldershot Ltd for highways improvements. The scheme will provide a seven-screen Cineworld cinema, a selection of restaurants, a 91-bed hotel and Morrisons' food store, as well as a 522-space car park. It is hoped that work will start on site in October this year, with completion in early 2012. For a copy of the full report detailing the Council's recommendation please see the Development Control Committee agenda.
