The Aviation ConnectionFind out about Rushmoor's aviation heritage.
The following websites will help you learn more about aviation in Farnborough. A key moment in Farnborough's aviation heritage took place on 16 October 1908 when Samuel Cody flew almost 1,400 feet in 27 seconds to an altitude of 30-40 feet in Army Aeroplane Number 1A. The website above gives a brief summary (by Cody historian Jean Roberts) of the life and achievements of Samuel Franklin Cody (1867-1913), showman, kite developer and aviator. It also includes a bibliography. The Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) promote Farnborough's aviation science heritage. A major project by FAST to build a non-flying, full size replica of British Army Aircraft Number 1A in which Cody, on 16th October 1908, made the first powered, controlled flight in the UK of a heavier than air machine. The Farnborough International Airshow is held in Farnborough every two years. A celebration of 100 years of British aviation took place at Brooklands Museum on 7 June 2008 with a particular emphasis on A.V. Roe. |
