Previous work on the Aldershot Urban Extension Project (2002-2005)

The Interim Planning Guidance for the Aldershot Urban Extension was adopted in 2005.

The guidance reflects and builds upon the principles agreed by the participants at the Enquiry by Design event held in December 2003. The Interim Planning Guidance and Sustainability Appraisal can be downloaded as PDF files be clicking on the corresponding icon on the right hand side of the page.

Enquiry by Design : Enquiry by Design

It looks specifically at how Aldershot's future could be shaped following the release of about 150 hectares (370 acres) of army land for private redevelopment, as part of the Ministry of Defence's Project Connaught. The proposed redevelopment of the army land will allow major expansion of the civilian town for the first time since the 1930s.

The guidance proposes a mixed-use development comprising new homes, together with two new primary schools, small scale employment and neighbourhood shopping uses and community facilities. It also sets out broadly how the land could be used to provide for a variety of homes supported by leisure facilities, workplaces and shops.

The guidance emphasises that the proposal must be far from being just another housing estate, but represent a sustainable extension of Aldershot with many of the facilities and jobs needed by its residents on the doorstep. The emphasis of the design is to reduce the need to travel by providing local facilities for the community complemented by excellent public transport, cycling and walking networks.

Councillor Peter Moyle, Leader of Rushmoor, said: "The results from the Enquiry by Design exercise offered an exEnquiry by Design2 : Enquiry by Design2citing urban design, building upon the rich military heritage of Cambridge Military Hospital, Queens Avenue and the parade grounds. The principles have been incorporated into the Guidance drawn up by Rushmoor. It is important for those concerned about the future of Aldershot to take this opportunity to look at the proposals and provide any comments to the Council so we are aware of the view of the ordinary Aldershot."

Councillor Roland Dibbs, Cabinet Member for Environment, added: "This Guidance is the first part of the jigsaw of ensuring a sustainable development by providing the basis of what Rushmoor wishes to see in development. Design Codes will be drawn up to ensure that we get high quality designs by providing prescriptive guidance on the designs of buildings, streets and public spaces."
