Open air cinema coming to Aldershot Lido this summer

Aldershot Lido will host its first open air cinema evenings this summer with the chance to enjoy an early evening swim, popular film and live music.

The events are being organised by Rushmoor Borough Council and Places for People, who run the lido on the council's behalf and will be hosted by Silent Summers Screenings who run many similar events across the country.

The idea came from the Friends of Aldershot Lido group who have been working closely with the council to promote the lido, organising extra activities and events to encourage more people to use the facilities.

Taking place on Thursday 13 July and Thursday 17 August, local people can vote for their favourite films on the Silent Summer Screenings Facebook page until Tuesday 16 May. Tickets will go on sale soon after.

The top five films in the running currently are Grease, Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, Mamma Mia and Pretty Women but local people can choose and vote for any film they like.

Gates will open at 7pm for swimming followed by live music and then the film. Ticket holders can bring a picnic, but no alcohol or glass will be allowed on the site.

Ashley Sharpe, Principal Contracts Manager at Rushmoor Borough Council said: "We are really pleased to be able to offer outdoor cinema evenings at the lido for the first time this season and we're looking forward to finding out what the final film choices are. There's already been lots of interest on social media with over 1,000 people already interested in coming along."

Aldershot Lido will officially open its doors for the summer season on Saturday 27 May. The pool will be open daily for the May half-term and throughout weekends in June, before opening daily for the summer on 1 July. Adult all-day tickets cost £7.30 and £4.30 for children. Under threes always go free.

There is a variety of special offers this year, including half-price entry after 3pm, family day tickets, season tickets, 20 per cent discount for military personnel and a loyalty card.

Early morning swimming sessions proved very popular last year and these will be back again on Sundays from 8.30am to 9.30am and on Wednesday mornings at 7am from 5 July onwards.

The Friends of Aldershot Lido are also working with the council to hold some other events over the summer, with an opening event on Saturday 27 May with live music from 2pm. Fun Days are also planned for Sunday 30 July and Sunday 20 August. Normal entry charges apply.

Further information about the lido is available on our Aldershot Lido page or by liking Aldershot Lido or Rushmoor Borough Council on Facebook.
