The Galleries

We consider the redevelopment of The Galleries essential for the regeneration of Aldershot town centre and one of our highest priorities.

Our regeneration plans for The Galleries site

Our regeneration plans for the former shopping centre are set out in the pdf icon Aldershot town centre prospectus [11Mb]

This proposes the redevelopment of The Galleries to help improve the town centre shopping offer and to introduce new residents into the heart of the town.

We anticipate that up to 500 new homes could be built alongside new ground floor retail floorspace. There would also be a new public space that could be the focus for town centre events.

What's happened so far

  • January 2016 - we adopt the pdf icon Aldershot town centre prospectus [11Mb]. This provided us with planning framework to take forward redevelopment proposals
  • July 2016 - a company called Shaviram Ltd buys The Galleries
  • August 2016 onwards - Shaviram is holding formal pre-application discussions with us
  • November 2016 - Shaviram acquires The Arcade next to The Galleries
  • December 2016 - we agree to the principle of including the High Street multi storey car park within the scope of the project, subject to Shaviram providing a new public car park of up to 300 spaces within the redevelopment

Next steps in the regeneration of The Galleries site

Shaviram, the owner of the site is reviewing the costs associated with developing the scheme to make sure it is deliverable.

It is anticipated that Shaviram will hold a public consultation event  in autumn 2017 before the company submits a planning application.

About The Galleries and its site

The Galleries shopping centre was built in the 1990s, but a major redevelopment project being planned in 2007 was a victim of the recession and so the site has remained unoccupied for many years. Its redevelopment is a high priority for us and residents.

The site is unusual, as the main internal shopping area is at upper level, connected to the Wellington Centre by a bridge over Wellington Street and with a cascade of escalators required to return shoppers to street level on High Street. This layout makes it difficult to redevelop using the existing building and is likely to require a comprehensive redevelopment.
