We consider the redevelopment of The Galleries essential for the regeneration of Aldershot town centre and one of our highest priorities.

About The Galleries

The Galleries shopping centre sits in the heart of Aldershot town centre and is privately owned by the Shaviram Group. Since buying the site in 2016, Shaviram has been working closely with us to bring forward comprehensive regeneration proposals that reflect the regeneration ambitions set out in the Aldershot town centre prospectus

Demolition of The Galleries

Demolition of The Galleries continues at pace. The link bridge has now been demolished. The removal of the bridge has opened up the views between the High Street and Victoria Road once more.

Development proposals

Our Development Management Committee granted planning permission in September 2022 for the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of 596 new flats, an improved public car park and new ground floor retail floorspace.

The proposals also include a large new public space that could be the focus for town centre events.

You can see Shaviram's planning application on our planning application website

Key council decisions

In order to bring forward the proposals, we have approved, in principle, to relinquish our land interest in the High Street multi-storey car park and to take a long-term lease on a new 250-space town centre car park. This will mean that the existing car park will be redeveloped as part of the scheme.

External funding for regeneration

We were successful in securing £3.4m of government grant funding from the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) to help with infrastructure works that will be needed for the scheme.
