Retail rate relief

The retail relief scheme ended on 31 March 2016 but you can still apply for backdated relief.

The government extended the business rate discount for 2015/16 for shops and premises with a rateable value below £50,000.

The discount for 2014/15 was £1,000.

This increased for 2015/16 to £1,500 for shops and food premises with a rateable value below £50,000.

In Aldershot and Farnborough, there were 300 to 400 eligible retail properties covered by a local pdf icon Retail relief policy [32kb] that allowed us to award relief.

To qualify for the relief, the retail business unit had to be wholly or mainly used as a shop, restaurant, café or drinking establishment.

The government announced the initiative in the 2013 autumn statement. Rushmoor Borough Council is able to decide when to award the grant relief, which is reimbursed in full by the government.

Applying for rate relief

Eligible businesses received rate relief automatically.

You can still apply for a backdate by filling in and returning our pdf icon Retail rate relief application form [125kb].

Businesses that receive the discount will receive a revised bill showing their reduced business rates.
