If your home has an annexe

If you have an annexe to your home, you may be able to get a 50 per cent discount in its council tax.

If you live in an annexe and are related to the person living in the main house

You may be entitled to a 50 per cent reduction in the council tax payable on the annexe.

The 50 per cent discount is on top of any other discount that you, or your relative, may be entitled to.

For example, if you are an adult son or daughter living in the annexe on your own, you will be liable for council tax, but will be entitled to a 25 per cent single person discount and then a 50 per cent annexe discount.

These rules came into effect on 1 April 2014.

If you use the annexe as part of your main home

If you live in the main house and use the annexe as part of your home, you may be entitled to a 50 per cent discount on the annexe.

This rule came into effect on 1 April 2014.

Check if you qualify for a council tax discount

If you would like to apply for either of these discounts, please complete the pdf icon Annexe application form [141kb] and return to the local taxation team.

Other reductions available for annexes

If you have a close relative, who lives in the annexe and is over 65 years of age or either severely mentally impaired or substantially and permanently disabled, we may be able to award an exemption for council tax for the annexe.

If the annexe is unoccupied and you cannot let it separately because of a planning restriction, it could also be exempt from council tax.

To apply for either of these exemptions, complete our Council tax exemptions and enquiry form.
