Our carbon emissions

Information on our carbon emissions and how we are reducing them.

In the last nine years, we have been able to reduce our carbon emissions by 1,124 tonnes, which works out to 21.6 per cent.

To date, the solar panels on five of our properties have generated 243,799 kWh of zero carbon emissions. In just 12 months in 2016/2017, the Combined Heat and Power Unit (CHP) in Farnborough Leisure Centre generated 1,131,408 kWh of electricity while producing 'free' heat for the building.

We have seen significant reductions in energy use in the buildings that we have targeted for energy efficiency improvements. Since 2009, electricity use in these buildings has decreased by 34.6 per cent and gas use by 14.0 per cent. In the case of car parks and park lighting, we have seen reductions in the order of 80 per cent.

Recent energy efficiency projects have included a new energy efficient air handling system in the civic suite in the council offices with thermal recovery, and LED lighting schemes in the several areas of the  council offices, the Princes Hall foyer, external canopy and walkways, green room and its bar, at Aldershot Crematorium and at Cove Green pavilion. We have installed energy efficient radiant heating in Rectory Road pavilion and fitted remote heating controls to Southwood pavilion to prevent unnecessary heating of the building.

We have also replaced inefficient, unreliable, end-of-life lighting with LED lighting controlled by sensors in external areas including Aldershot Crematorium car park, Municipal Gardens, Aldershot; Napier Gardens car park and green space in North Camp and King George V Playing Fields and Elles Hall green space in Farnborough.

We have installed solar film in the Aldershot Crematorium chapel and  at the Prospect Centre in Farnborough to reduce summer over-heating and the need for air conditioning.

Finally, we have replaced the stage lighting at the Princes Hall with LED stage lights, reducing the electricity used for stage lighting during rehearsals and shows by 89 per cent (24 kW to 2.7kW).
