Accessibility

Find out how to change text size and colour, and what we do to make sure our website is accessible.

We are working to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) published by W3C:

  • We provide accessible alternatives to Javascript and Flash on our site
  • We provide a text alternative for all images on the website
  • We make downloadable documents available in Portable Document Format (PDF). The more recent versions of Adobe Reader have improved accessibility features, including the facility to read the text out loud. Download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Changing text size

This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified 'text size' option in visual browsers. This means you can set the text size through your browser.

We have also provided a text sizer at the top of each page to allow you to make the font size bigger or smaller.

How you adjust the text size through your browser depends on your browser. Below are instructions on how to do this in some of the common browsers.

Internet Explorer

  • Select the 'View' menu item and then the 'Text Size' option
  • Internet Explorer offers five size options - largest, larger, medium, smaller and smallest. When you change this setting, the browser will remember it for all web sites that you visit
  • If you are using Internet Explorer 7, or above, you can also hold down the CTRL key and press the plus (+) or minus (-) keys to zoom the whole page

Safari

  • Select the 'View' menu and then either 'Zoom in' or 'Zoom out'. This will zoom the whole page
  • To make only the text size bigger, choose the 'Zoom Text Only' option in the 'View' menu

Chrome

  • Select 'Options' and then click on 'Under the bonnet' on the left menu
  • Adjust the 'Font Size' option as required

Firefox

  • Select the 'View' menu and then the 'Text Size' option
  • Unlike Internet Explorer, Firefox does not offer set options, but you can adjust the size until you find the best font size
  • You can also hold down CTRL and press the plus (+) or minus (-) keys to zoom the page, or you choose the 'Zoom Text Only' option, this will only adjust the size of the text

  • To select a link, you need to use the Tab key
  • When you press the key, you will notice that a link on the page has a fainted dotted rectangle around it
  • If you press the Tab key again, the dotted line will change to the next link
  • Once you have chosen the link you want, press the Enter key to move to the linked page or section of the page
  • If you continue to press the Tab key, you will move through or cycle through all the links until you reach the end of the page at which point you will return to the beginning again
  • If you happen to go past the link that you wanted to select, hold down the Shift key and then pressing Tab to go back to the previous link
