National planning policy

Find out about national planning policy.

National Planning Policy Framework

The government published the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in March 2012. This sets out the government's planning policies for England and how they should be applied to plan-making and planning decisions. The National Planning Policy Framework came into immediate effect and we must now consider it when we decide planning applications and prepare future Rushmoor Plan documents.

The National Planning Policy Framework replaces all previous national planning policy set out in planning policy statements and planning policy guidance notes. You can see a full list of the national guidance that has been superseded in  Annexe 3 of the National Planning Policy Framework document.

National planning policy for traveller sites

The government has also published national Planning policy for traveller sites. This sets out the government's planning policy and aims for traveller sites and should be read alongside the National Planning Policy Framework.

National Planning Practice Guidance

The government published the National Planning Practice Guidance (NPPG) on 6 March 2014. This seeks to make planning guidance easier and simpler for professionals and the public, and should be read in conjunction with national policy contained in the National Planning Policy Framework.

The National Planning Policy Guidance brings together and updates the previous raft of planning guidance documents into one online resource. The online guidance will be updated when needed and it is possible to sign up for email alerts on any changes, or view these revisions on the site itself.
