Rushmoor businesses respond well to alcohol checks

Shops and restaurants in Aldershot and Farnborough have been given the thumbs up after a pre-Christmas under age alcohol check.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary and Rushmoor Borough Council carried out test purchases using two volunteers, a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, on 28 premises on Tuesday, 19 December - and all of them refused to sell alcohol to them.

This included a number of premises that had previously failed tests and for which Rushmoor Borough Council officers had subsequently provided training and worked with the premises to improve their processes.

Councillor Ken Muschamp, Cabinet Member for Business, Safety and Regulation, said: "With the holiday season now here, the temptation is very high for young people to drink alcohol - so we are delighted that businesses in our towns are watchful and wary about someone who looks underage trying to buy alcohol.

"Our officers, along with those from Hampshire Constabulary and Trading Standards, have been busy this year and have found several outlets selling alcohol to underage drinkers.

"We would like to think the work we have done on this has helped to make businesses in the area very careful about who they sell alcohol to."
