Over the past 16 years, several members of Rushmoor Borough Council staff have served as retained firefighters at Rushmoor fire station during working hours, which means that sometimes they just have to stop what they are doing and rush out on a call.

Among these is Democratic Support Officer Chris Todd who was joined by left to right, Chief Executive Paul Shackley, the Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council Councillor David Clifford and the Cabinet member for Corporate Services, Councillor Paul Taylor, for the presentation of the framed certificate.

Chris, who has worked for the council for 28 years, 16 of which he has worked as a retained fire fighter, said: "Hampshire Fire and Rescue relies on retained fire fighters to provide critical cover across the county. It is particularly difficult to recruit fire fighters to provide cover for daytime periods so Rushmoor's support in allowing its employees to do this is invaluable and helps to keep the Rushmoor area safer."

Councillor Taylor, whose Cabinet brief includes the management of council staff, said: "The council and the community really value the work of retained firefighters like Chris, who, in an instant need to respond to emergency calls which could be a matter of life and death. As an organisation, we will do all we can to continue supporting retained firefighters who work for us."
