Christmas arrives in Aldershot town centre!

Christmas officially arrived in Aldershot on Saturday with a fun-packed afternoon of festive activities in the town centre for the annual Christmas lights switch-on organised by Rushmoor Borough Council.

There was a packed schedule of music and entertainment on a stage in Union Street hosted by 96.4 Eagle Radio with performances by Alderwood Junior Choir, up-and-coming country singer, Katy Hurt, The YEM Theatre School Rock Choir and Aldershot musician Jim Hammond.

Families enjoyed circus skills with Juggling Jake, as well as face-painting, fairground rides and a free Santa's grotto.  There were also opportunities to meet the animals from the Kidsrome living nativity and The Little Dallas Donkeys.

The Alder Valley Brass Brand and Cactus Brass entertained shoppers with traditional music and the Aldershot Lions offered mulled wine to raise funds for local community projects.

The crowds gathered to see Aldershot's very own X Factor star, Jack Mason perform songs from the show and then local band, Fuzz Universe then led the build up to the big 'switch-on'.

At 4.45pm characters from the Princes Hall pantomime, Aladdin came to the stage to start the countdown, joined by Father Christmas.  They were also joined by the Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Sophia Choudhary, the Mayoress of Rushmoor, Attika Choudhary, the Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council, Councillor David Clifford and MP for Aldershot, Leo Docherty.

Councillor David Clifford, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council, said: "We had a fabulous turnout for the event and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the activities and supporting the town.  This is just the start of the Christmas festivities and there will be something happening in Aldershot town centre every Saturday up to Christmas with the highlight being the town's first ever magical lantern procession on Saturday 16 December -  so please join us for craft fayres, music and more!"
