The council secured £30,000 of funding for the new equipment from the Suez Communities Trust's Big Play Fund, which supports a wide range of community and environmental projects.  A further £74,000 came from developers' contributions.

The new playground has a pirate theme - complete with its own pirate ship climbing frame and slide, a monkey island spinning swing, a drift wood climbing frame and a jolly rocker rope swing.

Local residents were invited to give their views on the equipment that they wanted to see in the new playground and to vote on the winning design, with 158 people taking part in an online survey.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Youth at Rushmoor Borough Council, said:  "I'm thrilled that we have been able to invest in another modern, new playground this time, for families in North Camp and wonderful that so many people were involved in its creation."

The Deputy Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Stephen Masterson said: "The finished playground is wonderful and will give many years of enjoyment for local families. We truly have the community to thank for this new site as the play area was nominated for funding from the Big Play Fund, by a local resident.  The winning pirate design is really spectacular with a good mix of equipment for different ages of children."

The Councillors for the St Mark's ward were delighted to attend the official opening and Councillor Diane Bedford added: "The new playground now complements the basketball court, which the council was also able to refurbish last year, so we are pleased that there is now something for all ages to enjoy."

Marianne Ivin, Programme Co-ordinator for the SUEZ Communities Trust, added: "This is another exciting project from Rushmoor Borough Council and we are delighted to help bring the local community vision into reality.
